The Wayne County Sheriff’s Department has been awarded a $45,000.00 Counter Terrorism grant from the Department of Homeland Security. ” The funds from the grant are going to make our department more readily able to deploy the water craft and ATVS used by the Department in areas that are not accessible by patrol vehicles to better serve the citizens of Wayne County.” said Sheriff Farrior.

This grant enabled the department to purchase a 2008 Dodge Durango fully equipped to respond to crisis situations and ten in car digital video dash cameras. Chief Deputy Gerald Barnett serves as the department’s Grant Officer and was successful in securing this grant for the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department. The dash cameras are a valuable tool for law enforcement. They provide video and audio evidence that enhance the prosecution of DUI’S. Deputies are capable of activating the camera and videoing a suspect operating the vehicle before the traffic stop is initiated. The conversation between the Deputy and suspect driver is recorded. These cameras are designed to be easily deployed into a crime scene for videoing and documenting crime scenes.
The equipment purchased with this grant come at no cost to the citizens of Wayne County. Sheriff Farrior said, ”Chief Deputy did a great job in securing this grant and will be actively pursuing state and federal grants in the future.” Chief Deputy Barnett is now working on a grant that will place a NCIC computer in the patrol cars. These NCIC computers in the cars will enable Deputies to run driver license checks, wanted person search, license plate inquiries, & criminal records check in the field. We have been working towards acquiring this equipment and grant since 2000.
