WCSO Warns Citizens Of Local Scam

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Department and the Waynesboro Police Department has received multiple reports of a phone scam that is operating within the Wayne County - Waynesboro area. The scam begins by an individual posing as an official with a local bank. The individual has a great deal of information about the potential victim. The scam operator tells the unsuspecting individual that someone is at the bank attempting to complete a transaction on their account and needs them to verify their social security number and account number.
We have received reports from several people that have had their accounts accessed and money actually stolen.
We are advising everyone that this is not the way banks operate. If you are contacted by someone telling you they are a bank official simply hang up. You can then call your bank and talk to someone that you know or go to your bank in person. Do not give any information out over the phone to anyone.
