18-wheeler hits WCSD vehicle

No one was injured after an 18-wheeler struck a Wayne County Sheriff’s Department cruiser Monday morning. According to Sheriff Jody Ashley, Deputy Preston Shedd was working traffic control on Highway 84 as a concrete company was pouring concrete on a lot located alongside the highway. The concrete trucks were having to pull out onto Highway 84 between Buddy’s Food and Fuel and Coastal Chemicals, and traffic control was requested of the Sheriff’s Department by the company. Shedd was handling those traffic control duties, with his vehicle’s blue lights and flashers turned on when an 18-wheeler came through the area and struck the cruiser. Shedd dove out of the way and into a nearby ditch, and Ashley said the truck was finally able to stop roughly 100 feet from the scene of the accident. “We are glad that no one was hurt,” Ashley said. “The vehicle was totally destroyed, but that isn’t our main concern. We can always replace a vehicle. We can’t replace a deputy.” The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
