A church burglary has led to a $500 reward being offered for information that could lead to a break in the ongoing investigation.
Wayne County Sheriff John Stein Farrior said Immanuel Freewill Baptist Church on Highway 63 South in Waynesboro was reportedly broken into sometime between July 25 and 28.
“According to several subjects at the church, three hand-puppets and about $50 in cash were among the items taken from the building,” Farrior said based on the report filed through his office on the incident.
“Members, who spoke with the deputies, noted the possibly of someone with a key to the church may have entered the building as no signs of forced entry were found.”
Farrior said the offense, which has angered church members, is considered petit larceny.
“The people at the church feel violated,” Farrior said. “They want to see this incident resolved, and so do we.”
Among the items reported as taken from the church were:
• A small cowgirl puppet with brown clothes, brown hair and a brown jacket.
• A large girl puppet with “cool” written on a green and white T-shirt. The puppet also had snake-skin pants.
• A camel puppet with a black leather jacket.
• A small wooden bar stool
• About $50 in cash from a ceramic church bank in the sanctuary.
Farrior encouraged anyone with information in the case to contact his office at 601-735-3801 or Wayne County CrimeStoppers at 601-735-5323.

Working on a tip received through Crime Stoppers, Deputy Wesley Waites and Investigator Kevin Stevens located the individuals responsible for this incident. The individuals were former church members that still had a key. They returned to the church to retrieve the puppets. The case is still under investigation.
